4-Day Beijing Landmark Tour: Forbidden City, Great Wall, Hutong Life, Temple of Heaven, and Summer Palace
Description
This is our flagship Beijing itinerary — the one we recommend most often to first-time visitors who want to understand the city rather than just complete it. Over four days, the tour covers everything that defines Beijing: the Forbidden City, the Great Wall at Mutianyu, the living lanes of the old hutong neighborhoods, the Temple of Heaven, and the Summer Palace. But it does so with a structure that many multi-day Beijing tours lack — one main experience per day, a genuine arrival buffer on Day 1, and a pace throughout that leaves guests feeling they have truly absorbed a place rather than raced through it. Private guide, private vehicle, three nights hotel, and four lunches are all included.

Travel Itinerary
D1-Afternoon - Airport or Station Pickup & Hotel Check-In
Your driver will meet you at the airport or railway station and transfer you comfortably to your hotel. Day 1 is intentionally free of heavy sightseeing — after a long international flight or train journey, the best thing Beijing can offer is the chance to settle in, get oriented, and arrive in the evening in good shape.
Custom option:
Hotel category for different comfort levels and budgets
D1-Evening - Shichahai Lakeside Walk
Once you have rested and refreshed, your guide takes you for a gentle evening walk around Shichahai — the system of three connected lakes in the heart of the old city that served as the northern terminus of the Grand Canal and the leisure centre of imperial Beijing's social life. This is an introduction to Beijing rather than a sightseeing session, and it sets the tone for the four days ahead.
Custom option:
Peking duck dinner
D2-Morning - The-Forbidden City
Explore a carefully curated route through the Forbidden City designed to go beyond the standard sightseeing experience. As you move along Beijing’s historic central axis, your guide will explain how the palace layout, ceremonial courtyards, gates, and throne halls were all arranged to reflect imperial power, hierarchy, and political order. Rather than simply viewing a series of buildings, you will gain a clearer understanding of how the Forbidden City functioned as the center of the Chinese empire for nearly 500 years. Along the way, your guide also shares stories of court life, royal rituals, and the architectural details that most visitors pass by without noticing.
Lunch is at a comfortable local restaurant near the palace district. And the meal is unhurried — a genuine pause before the afternoon.
D2-Afternoon - Jingshan Park, Teahouse & Hutong Walk
A short walk north of the Forbidden City, Jingshan Park's Wanchun Pavilion offers the city's finest elevated view of the palace's entire golden roofline — a perspective that makes the axial logic and sheer scale of the imperial complex fully legible for the first time. After descending, the afternoon slows down deliberately: a rest at a traditional teahouse, or a gentle walk through the old hutong neighborhoods nearby.
Custom option:
Afternoon tea at a teahouse or café
D3-Morning - Drive to Mutianyu Great Wall
After breakfast at the hotel, your driver will pick you up for the approximately 1.5-2 hours drive to Mutianyu. Your guide builds the historical and strategic context for what lies ahead — how the Wall was engineered across mountain ridgelines, how this particular section was garrisoned during the Ming dynasty, and what to look for when you arrive.
On arrival at Mutianyu, the group sits down for a relaxed local lunch near the entrance before heading up, so everyone arrives on the Great Wall with energy and without any sense of rush.
D3-Afternoon - The Great Wall Exploration & Photography
Explore the Mutianyu Great Wall at a pace that suits your group, with no fixed walking distance or rushed schedule. Walk between restored watchtowers, pause for photos, and enjoy panoramic mountain views while your guide explains the Wall’s construction, defensive system, and historical signaling methods. Walking time and distance can be adjusted throughout the visit based on your group’s energy and interests. Then return to the hotel.
Custom options:
- Cable car for ascent or descent
- Toboggan slide for descent
D4-Morning - The Temple of Heaven
After breakfast, your guide transfers you to the Temple of Heaven complex — one of the finest surviving examples of Ming dynasty religious architecture and the site of the annual Heaven worship ceremony that lay at the center of imperial China's cosmological world view. As important as the architecture is what surrounds it: the Temple of Heaven's vast parkland fills every morning with local residents practising tai chi, playing erhu, performing group exercises, and playing chess — a scene that is as revealing of Beijing's present as the buildings are of its past.
Lunch is arranged at a comfortable restaurant after the Temple of Heaven.
D4-Afternoon - The Summer Palace: Lakeside Walk
The final afternoon is spent at the Summer Palace — the Qing dynasty imperial garden and lake complex on Beijing's northwestern edge that served as the court's primary retreat from the heat and formality of the Forbidden City.
Custom option:
- Boat ride across the lake as an optional experience.
- Direct transfer to the airport or railway station.
