2-Day Beijing Tour: Forbidden City & Mutianyu Great Wall
Description
If you have two days in Beijing, this is how to spend them well. Rather than trying to cover every landmark in a rush, this private tour concentrates on the two experiences that define the city above all others: the Forbidden City, the vast imperial palace that housed China’s emperors for nearly five centuries, and Mutianyu Great Wall, one of the most scenic and well-preserved sections of the world’s most iconic structure. Each has its own full day, its own depth of storytelling, and its own unhurried pace — guided throughout by a professional English-speaking guide, with hotel, transfers, and two local lunches included.

Travel Itinerary
D1-Morning - The Forbidden City
The tour follows the Forbidden City's central axis — the spine of power along which China's emperors conducted the rituals of governance — through the Three Great Halls, into the inner residential courtyards, and through the living quarters of the imperial family. Rather than attempting to cover the entire 180-acre site, your guide focuses on the spaces with the richest stories: the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Palace of Heavenly Purity, and the Imperial Garden at the northern end. This is the Forbidden City understood, not just photographed.
Lunch is arranged at a comfortable local restaurant near the palace district — a proper sit-down meal with time to rest and reflect, not a rushed group-style dining stop.
D1-Afternoon - Jingshan Park & Hutong Walk
A short walk north of the Forbidden City, Jingshan Park sits atop a man-made hill that was constructed from the earth excavated to build the palace moat. From the Wanchun Pavilion at its summit, you look directly down the central axis over the entire Forbidden City — a view that makes the scale and geometric logic of the imperial complex suddenly, breathtakingly clear. After descending, the afternoon shifts in pace: a gentle walk through the old hutong neighborhoods nearby.
Custom options:
- Afternoon tea at a teahouse or café
- A Peking duck dinner
D2-Morning - Drive to Mutianyu Great Wall
Driver picks you up for the approximately 1.5-2 hours drive to Mutianyu. The journey out of the city and into the forested Huairou hills is a transition in itself — your guide uses the time to share the history and strategic significance of this particular section of the Wall, and what to expect when you arrive.
On arrival at Mutianyu, the day begins with a relaxed local lunch at a restaurant near the entrance, so you head up to the Wall with energy and without any mid-morning rush.
D2-Afternoon - Great Wall Exploration
Explore at whatever pace suits your group. There is no set distance to cover and no schedule to keep. Walk between watchtowers, pause to take in the views across the valley, and let your guide bring the Wall's layered history to life — the Ming dynasty construction, the garrison life, the engineering logic of building a fortification across mountain ridgelines. Walking time is fully flexible and adjustable throughout the afternoon based on your group's energy.
Custom options:
- Cable car for ascent or descent
- Toboggan slide for descent
D2-Late Afternoon - Descent & Return to Beijing
When you are ready to come down, choose the cable car or the optional toboggan run — a 1,580-metre steel slide down the hillside and a memorable end to the day for many guests. Your driver then returns you to your Beijing hotel or onward transfer point, concluding the two-day tour.
