FAQs About China Travel

Everything you need to know before booking your China tour.

What type of power plug/adapter do I need for China?

China uses three types of plugs: Type A (two flat parallel pins), Type C, and Type I (three flat pins in a V-shape). Most hotels provide universal sockets that fit standard US (Type A) and European (Type C) plugs, but it’s highly recommended to bring a universal travel adapter. China’s standard voltage is 220V.

What do I need to know about boarding high-speed trains with a passport?

China has gone completely paperless with e-tickets. When you book a train ticket online (via Trip.com or 12306), it is tied directly to your passport number. When you arrive at the railway station, you do not need to pick up a paper ticket. Simply walk to the manual or automated gates, scan your physical passport, and enter.

Is Google Maps accurate in China, or should I use an alternative?

Google Maps is highly inaccurate and blocked in China. For iPhone users, Apple Maps works flawlessly in English without a VPN and provides excellent public transit routing. For Android users, use Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps. While they are only in Chinese, you can copy-paste Chinese addresses from your hotel booking into them for precise navigation.

How can I translate restaurant menus that only have QR codes?

Most Chinese restaurants use WeChat or Alipay QR codes on the table for ordering, and these menus are usually 100% in Chinese. The easiest workaround is to take a screenshot of the menu on your phone, open Google Translate or WeChat’s built-in “Scan” function, and use the photo translation feature to instantly read the dishes in English.

Will my phone work in China as soon as I land?

If you rely on public Wi-Fi at airports or hotels, you will usually need a Chinese phone number to receive an SMS verification code to log in. Purchasing an international roaming plan or an eSIM beforehand is highly recommended to stay connected immediately.

Can I travel to China without a visa?

While China has expanded visa-free transit (like the 144-hour policy) and unilateral visa-free entry for certain nationalities, the rules are strictly conditional based on your port of entry and your next destination. Any mistake in your transit route can result in being denied boarding at the airport.
